A subterranean bar in an unusual location on the edge of the city, ‘Discount Suit Company’ is an underground speakeasy that once was the stockroom of the tailors above. Sitting in the centre of Wentworth Street (part of the Petticoat Lane Market) it’s surrounded by street traders and fabric shops, but once the hubbub of the trading market ceases, the street falls silent, unless you know what’s lurking underground! This is the perfect location for a secret speakeasy.
I’m not a massive fan of the city so I was unsure to be brought to Liverpool Street on a recent date. But hidden down a tiny alleyway is this beautiful Italian restaurant.
We were seated on a little candlelit table next to the window and I was instantly impressed by the welcoming wait staff and stylish Italian feel that the restaurant had. Being an Italian wine bar, there was an extensive choice of wines. Admittedly, I don’t know much about wines so I let my date decide. Luckily he choose a delicious bottle of red which was the perfect start to our evening.
I was brought to lovely little Bar Prague in the heart of Shoreditch on a date recently and loved its laid back and intimate setting. Lit by candles, it feels very Shoreditch with exposed brick work walls, mismatched furniture and local artwork and vintage street lamps on the walls but it’s completely unpretentious.
Fancying a laid back Saturday night, my date and I decided to try Shoreditch’s Pizza East after hearing good things about it from friends. Based in the Tea Building on the corner of Shoreditch High Street and Bethnal Green Road, we were pretty unimpressed by the grimy old concrete stairwell that served as the entrance, but as soon as we went in we could see that Pizza East was clearly the place to be by the sheer number of diners waiting to eat. Luckily, being an old warehouse Pizza East is huge so we didn’t have to wait long to be seated.
Two of the best London markets, Old Spitalfield’s Market and Brick Lane Market in East London provide a great setting for something a bit different to do on a date.
Located a short walk away from Shoreditch High Street Station, the Whistling shop is still something of an unknown (so shhhhh don’t tell anyone!)
A somewhat secret speakeasy, the Whistling Shop offers something different from your average London bar scene, offering tasty reinterpretations of popular British cocktails, an extensive wine list as well as a choice of tasty snacks. The cocktail menu changes every few months, which is reason enough to keep coming back to sample the different offerings!
