Sitting in a pretty Georgian townhouse, The Modern Pantry offers fresh, imaginative and well cooked food making it a perfect choice for a date.
Having walked past this restaurant many times on my way to work, I was thrilled when I finally came here on a date last week. My date and I were seated by the window, giving us lovely views over Clerkenwell Square. To begin our evening we decided on starters, with me choosing a goats cheese salad served with celery and a liquorice dressing while my date opted for okra, feta and turmeric fritters, which we washed down with a crisp glass of wine. This was quickly followed by a main of roast chestnut, spiced manouri and sweet potato briq served with pickled shimeji and green peppercorns in a tomato and lemongrass dressing. My date meanwhile opted for slow roast Gloucester Old Spot pork belly with caraway roast butternut squash, braised red cabbage and a shallot, apple & tamarind chutney. Both were absolutely delicious.
After two brilliant courses, we decided to have a pause which gave us a chance to chat, enjoy our wine and look around the restaurant. Light and airy, with neat lines and fresh flowers everywhere, the restaurant has a very clean feel to it. One of my favourite things about this place is that we didn’t feel rushed at all and were given the space by the staff to enjoy our meal at a leisurely pace.
After looking at the desert menu, we did finally decide that we couldn’t resist it and I chose the chocolate caramel fondant which came with frozen turmeric yoghurt, candied peanuts and caramel corn. My date meanwhile opted for the nougatine tuile with apple compote, chipotle butterscotch and malt ice cream.
We were well and truly stuffed after our meals but decided that we weren’t quite ready for the night so after leaving the lovely Modern Pantry, we crossed the pretty cobbled square to the Zetter Townhouse, where we ended our night with a cocktail. Also close by is Giant Robot and The Artisan of Clerkenwell if you fancy finishing your night there instead.
All in all, a really lovely night. Beautifully fresh food, with some of the most delightfully charming staff that I’ve ever encountered and in a beautifully old location, The Modern Pantry is definitely one to keep on the date list.
