The Escoffier Room near Victoria is the perfect place to go for a weekday lunchtime date. It provides a fine-dining lunch, without you having to pay the Earth.
The food was indescribably good, and unsurprisingly so as this restaurant is headed up by trainee chefs destined to cook for Michelin star restaurants. We ordered the seven course set tasting menu which also included masses of petit fours at the end if you get a coffee, very reasonably priced at £27.50 per person. We also got a good quality bottle of wine for £15.
To name but a few of tasty courses, our meal included a course of venison carpachio, as well as a course of sea-trout with capers and crispy polenta and a pre dessert of kumquat sorbet.
The Escoffier Room is also the training ground for top waiters and as such there were some pretty amusing slip ups. There were far too many waiters for our table and we kept getting offered bread by a different, eager student each time. It was like they were trying to get rid of it as quickly as possible! We gave up taking bread after the fifth round as we just couldn’t eat any more. However this unusual service actually helped make our date more enjoyable with the small informalities making us more relaxed. The students were clearly nervous, but were so keen to do a good job which just endeared us to them.
Overall we really enjoyed our date at the Escoffier Room – fantastic food for a great price and although the service wasn’t perfect, it made us smile.
