Situated on Balham High Road, we would have most likely walked straight past this place had it not been for its great reputation. Good thing too, for as soon as we walked into Ciullõsteria we were made to feel at home.
We were ushered to a lovely little table in the corner and made to feel really welcome by our Italian waiter who promptly described the specials menu to us. The small room is lit by candlelight including a large candelabrum in the centre of the room which added to the atmosphere.
We started our meal with a delicious bottle of Prosecco which we can’t recommend highly enough. It was one of the best we’ve tasted and was reasonably priced at £25. We enjoyed this with a shared starter of tiger prawns in garlic and fresh chilli olive oil on toasted ciabatta bread. The prawns were enormous and superbly seasoned, the perfect start to our meal though the portion was definitely on the large side. We followed with freshly made ricotta & spinach tortelloni in a tomato and mascarpone cream sauce and the Ciullõsteria pizza topped with tomato, buffalo mozzarella, parma ham and a touch of parmesan and pesto. Both portions were so big we struggled to finish despite the fact that they were absolutely delicious. This restaurant also serves a good range of meat and fish dishes, all of which sounded tasty.
After this meal, we can see us becoming regulars to this lovely Italian. The place is packed most nights of the week so it’s worth booking in advance, just to be sure they’ll have space for you. If you fancy a drink after your meal, we recommend Balham Bowls Club which is just up the street.
