I have to admit, I wasn’t sure about how this date was going to turn out when my date told me he was taking me to a vegetarian restaurant on a 100% vegan, 100% organic night but I have to hand it to him, I was very pleasantly surprised by this choice.
This place is absolutely tiny and sitting on a quiet residential street in Vauxhall, is clearly converted from a house. We sat at the front of the restaurant at a little candlelit table by the window. It’s certainly an intimate setting; perhaps a bit much for a first date but romantic if you’re a few dates down the line.
This place is BYO so we picked up a bottle of wine on the way and got started on it while perusing the menu. I’ll be honest; there wasn’t exactly much of a menu being only two options for each course. Luckily, both sounded really good. We both went for the aubergine bake with butternut squash and rice. This felt like good home cooked food with a healthy twist and was certainly something different. For desert, we went for apple crumble with ice cream. I wasn’t sure how this would taste, being made only from vegan ingredients but I have to take my hat off to the chef, it was ridiculously tasty. It’s all really good value as well, the mains being £7 and deserts only £3 so combined with BYO, you can definitely do this date on a budget.
They have a different chef and theme on every night so I expect no two experiences are quite the same which gives this place that air of something different. All in all, the Bonnington Cafe is great value, has friendly staff and offers tasty food – if you and your date are a fan of vegetarian food then this place will be for you.
