Beagle restaurant

Sitting within two of the railway arches by Hoxton Station, this bar/restaurant is causing a stir in East London with its unashamedly industrial feel and upmarket food and cocktails.

I came here on a date last week and loved the smart feel of it. Exposed brickwork, metal tables and chairs and a concrete floor doesn’t sound like much but it’s beautifully smart and softened by flowers and candlelight.

We started our evening in the bar which sits in the first railway arch and made the most of the happy hour which offered 2 for 1 cocktails. We got to know each other better over gooseberry martinis which started our night off perfectly. Don’t worry if you’re not a gooseberry fan, there’s a wide selection of cocktails to choose from including vodka, gin, whiskey and tequila based drinks as well as Bloody Mary’s. My favourite of the night was the Somerset cocktail which had apple eau de vie, herbal liqueur, lemon juice, egg white, bitters and soda.

After starting in the bar we then moved on to the second railway arch where the restaurant sits. Head chef James Ferguson used to be the head chef at the excellent Rochelle Canteen for four years, and he’s tried to bring the same beautifully simple British dishes to the Beagle. We started off sharing two of the starters; I chose the grilled chicory with pine nuts and feta while my date opted for the crab bisque with tomatoes and basil. We both loved the starters and were really looking forward to the mains. There’s only five dishes to choose from so you definitely can’t be too fussy. Luckily I liked the look of most of them and finally opted for the roast Suffolk chicken with lentils and rainbow chard while my date enjoyed the wood grilled Herdwick lamb with runner beans and anchovies. Both were absolutely delicious. After we’d let our food digest, even though we really didn’t need it we decided to try some of the deserts after seeing them on the table next to us, picking the blueberry and almond tart and the blackcurrant Eton mess. We didn’t regret it!

Overall the evening was really lovely from start to finish. I couldn’t have been happier with Beagle, really want to go back there for seconds!
